Pet Allergies

There are many types of allergens that can affect your pet, causing symptoms such as rashes, infections, and excessive licking or scratching. Luckily, there are various treatments to help relieve allergy symptoms in dogs and cats. Baldwin Animal Hospital offers a simple blood test called serum allergy testing. With this test, a small sample of blood is drawn and sent to a laboratory for analysis, identifying the specific allergens causing the allergic response in your pet. Once we have established the cause of the reaction, we will provide treatment using a specialized serum containing small quantities of these allergens that are specially formulated for your pet.

Our veterinarians can diagnose and treat a variety of skin conditions such as:

  • Food allergies, contact allergies, and atopy
  • Reactions to inhalants and fleas
  • Parasites (fleas and mites)
  • Autoimmune related skin diseases
  • Infectious diseases (bacterial and fungal)
  • Hormonal diseases
  • Recurring ear infections
  • Skin cancer

Ear Care

Otitis externa is inflammation of the external ear, and a common condition in dogs that could indicate an infection. There are a number of causes of ear inflammation, but most cases respond to treatment quickly when the initial cause is addressed. The sooner you bring your pet in for an examination, the easier the treatment will be. If your dog is showing signs of external ear inflammation, please call us to schedule an appointment.

Symptoms of Otitis Externa include:

  • Odor or discharge from the ear
  • Scratching or shaking of the head or ears
  • Soreness of the ear canal
  • Swelling of the ear flap

Causes of otitis include: allergies, ear mites, foreign bodies, hormone imbalances, conformation of ear (floppy ears), excessive wax, polyps/tumors in ears, and bathing/swimming. Yeast or bacterial infections are common complications. When we treat the inflammation, we must also get rid of the infection and prevent infections in the future.

If your pet is having problems with skin allergies or ear problems, please call us right away to schedule an appointment.
