Like humans, many pets begin to develop advanced health conditions that require specialized veterinary care. With a thorough physical exam combined with minimally invasive diagnostic tests, our veterinarians will develop a treatment plan that is best for your pet and their lifestyle. Laboratory tests are critical during medical evaluations to assist in determining the functionality of the internal organs and systems. We use these tests to look for signs of inflammation or infection that may be present. Occasionally, certain tests will require anesthesia, and an overnight hospital stay may also be recommended to help prepare your pet for the procedure.

The following symptoms can indicate a serious problem, especially if left untreated. If you notice that your pet is exhibiting any of the symptoms listed, please bring them in for an exam as soon as possible.

Cardiology

Cardiological disorders are related to the heart and lungs and include conditions such as congestive heart failure, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and valve disorders. Symptoms of cardiological problems include:

• Intolerance to exercise
• Coughing
• Fast breathing while at rest
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Weakness or collapse
• Fainting spells

Endocrinology

Hormonal diseases can occur as a result of an excess or lack of certain hormones. Examples of hormonal diseases include hyperthyroidism in cats and diabetes. Some of the symptoms of hormonal imbalance are:

• Vomiting
• Excessive panting
• Weight loss or weight gain
• Weakness and lethargy
• Increased or decreased appetite
• Increased drinking and urinating
• Skin problems such as hair loss or frequent infections

Gastroenterology

The organ system includes the stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder. Examples of gastrointestinal disorders in your pet include bloat, pancreatitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders include:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Poor overall health

Dermatology

Dermatological conditions primarily affect the skin and ears. Dermatological conditions include skin diseases and irritation, ear infections, auto-immune problems, and allergies. Symptoms of dermatological conditions include:

• Itchy, runny eyes
• Constant licking
• Increased scratching
• Paw chewing/swollen paws
• Itchy, red, or scabbed skin
• Itchy ears and ear infections
• Itchy back or base of tail

Urology

Urology refers to disorders of the urinary tract and reproductive systems. Examples of urological disorders include acute or chronic kidney failure, kidney or bladder stones, blockage of the urinary tract, and urinary incontinence. Symptoms of pets with urological disorders include:

• Excessive drinking
• Frequent urination
• Urinary incontinence
• Blood in the urine
